I like this idea.

Generic early iron age baltic low-grade fantasy setting actually...

Why not start camp-fires along the cavern walls until they glow with heat, then quickly douse them with water buckets to weaken or even crack the rock... It's how they usually went about it in this era.

The new world plants place it shortly after colonization. However i do like your suggestion with mining it is accurate.

Ancient egyptians had access to tobacco. So I would place it roughly between "dawn of civilization" and "Ragnar Lodbrook Tours Paris".
I do believe I read a article on Roman gold mining... At least where clay-rich areas were concerned, they'd just divert a river into a shaft and rip the mountain in two. (It was a bit more complicated than that, but basicly.) I doubt the haven engine could support such whimsical geologic deformation though. And it's Haven & Hearth, not Lead Cups & Aqueducts.

Explosives are a ridiculous idea. If only because it would make even brick walls woefully inadequate defensive measures.
