What would be nice is tech-skipping via teaching. Just as computer programmers dont need to know much about metallurgy today, skilled smiths of the past needed to know very little about mining. They needed to know about how to identify quality metal, but not quality ore per se. It would be nice to see civ advancements that allow some skipping of the early tech tree.

why shouldnt trade be the only way to get things you "need" when you are playing a solo crafter specialized in only a few areas
