The paint would crack of the leather, because it's too soft and flexible. BUT if we used hard leather it'd be fine, maybe. Yet then the game would become like Runescape :P
Metal armor could be painted with enamel though.

If we are going to have deep water soon, how about oyster and sea snail diving?
The sea snails being rare, and possibly dangerous (In RL they are a predatory snail, but not dangerous) But if you can collect enough you could dye things purple.
The oysters, of course, being food and a chance of pearls.

Pearls would be awesome, but they would need some kind of practical use in order to make them be a demanded item; perhaps they are a magical ingredient? I understand that there is some mythology of dissolving pearls in wine for one's health...

Could be used for pearl necklasses that gave a + to some stat....
