the only thing this is good for is banners, everything besides capes is too small and the animating each symbol for the capes would be insane.

Simplifying heraldry would make the interface easier to handle, but implementing full heraldry would require less art assets because you could have more unique combinations with the same number of assets.

i dont understand why mix and match symbols would require less effort to implement than just plain symbols, but maybe??

Well, the symbol, as I understand it from your post, is equivalent to charge in heraldry. The only difference between your suggestion and mine is that you propose a solid background colour and I want background to be divisible in multiple colours. This allows for a lot more unique combinations.
