A full platemail only sligtly hinders your movement so you would still be able to run. But since it weighs between 20kg to 50kg, depending on the manner of production and material, you would run out of breath.

Kinda depends on the crossbow you know. A winch loaded one can penetrate while a handload will just be like a shortbow.

On topic. Even though it's annoying with the armor breaking, a leather armor that takes damage will be useless after a while.
Rather than having armor dependancies I'd love to have a more skilldependent system with more missing and where getting hit might be fatal.
I find that more interessting to see than the usual RPG system where two guys takes turn at kicking eachother, where the winner is the one with the largest boots.

Indeed and so could someone skilled with a longbow, again though it does depend as the strength of armour and power of crossbows escalated due to one another. Armour got more restrictive as they were made stronger to combat crossbows and crossbows got more powerful to pierce the ever stronger armour.

I was not aware that current ranged weapons did no damage to those of us in steel breastplates although while taking out one of the thieves at Shadyacre I noticed a lack of damage from their single arrow shot but wasn't sure if they'd just missed me.

I just realised though, horses but talking of that would lead this topic astray.

Well, iron /steel arrow tips can penetrate armor for sure but the odds are low. I just said stone and bone can't.

English longbowmen actually slaughtered lots of french knights. They were showered with arrows ,ell off their horse and could not stand up. Once all of them fell they just walk up to them and stabbed them below the chin. But if they didn't have horses they would just be able to survive the rain of arrows.

I am not sure how archery is going to be handled eventually, but i think damage should rely on the poundage (bow). And for a higher end bow you need more marksmanship.

Combat plate is suprisingly agile actually and the only plate armor that a horseman can not move well in is the tournamental armor, which have heavy frontal platings.
A longbow can penetrate platemail but it became increasingly difficult when good steel armors appeared, but few people could afford having such an armor.
So if the archers were close enough to walk up to a downed knight before they stood up again they should be able to penetrate the armor.

This sounds like a great idea but might be hard to implement with the current combatsystem

I think one of the knights' legs would be stuck beneath his horse. That would make getting back up before being stabbed a little difficult.

I agree that a combination of different types of bows (some of which would be more powerful than others) and the addition of metal arrows would be the best way to increase damage, but abilities (such as perception) and, of course, marksmanship should remain important. Perhaps your ability to aim should help you to pierce armor.

Leather armor, on the other hand, should be affected differently by different weapons. This might be tough to do, but I imagine that an unarmed punch would do a little less damage to leather than a blow from a sword.

That slaughter of knights was one battle, and it took place in a ploughed field after heavy rain, so mud was knee-deep. Armour or no armour, it'd be very difficult to get up in those conditions, especially when you're being stomped on by a crowd. In normal circumstances, getting up while wearing plate wouldn't be much harder than getting up in no armour at all, provided you've worn the plate for long enough to get a feel of how it affects your centre of gravity.

After watching some vids on youtube i changed my mind too. But i still think you'd need to roll over and get up using your knees.

Also, difference between normal plate and hardened plate:

Adam- wrote:Well, leather armor I have to say has been horrible.

It's so weak it's ridiculous, if a fox so much as stares at it the armor snaps in half, or is put from 100hp down to around 40hp  . I really think for the amount of work required to make it that it should be a little bit harder to break. Its very tedious.

Edit: Also, I would like to inquire about marksmanship. When we do get our skill for extra damage like a triple shot or something and a perception damage increase, will we be able to solo with archery? (this is assuming that pathfinding is fixed)

Also - good job on the census system Loftar and Jorb.

I agree that something will need balancing eventually. it doesnt make sense to just make them better. the new stealth skill, or something like it (A stalk skill, for hunting? Sneaking up on a rabbit in full plate should be rough)
MOST important, I think leather making needs to give xp. Ive said this before, but really. We get exp for pulling branches, picking apples, taking bark...how about us poor, neglected leather workers?

Well, I think the actual killing of the animal is supposed to offset that, especially if you're hunting tougher game.
Although it'd be nice if leathers being dried and tanned gave you a small piece of LP.

Personally, I'd like to see some stronger leather armor. I think the ranger set is supposed to reflect this, and will probably have different means to obtain it once they add the rare required item in place of the placeholder steel.
Of course, this is coming from someone who wouldn't mind seeing a ¤Dragon Leather Armor¤.

Problem with that is that most tanners in towns ( atleast i do think so) are not hunters.
