and for stupidly large hauls you can use containers in carts.

Carts are NOT safe. Do NOT put containers (or anything else important) in your carts unless you want to take the risk of them getting eaten, along with everything in them, by a server crash happening an hour or so later... I've lost all my chests, all my seeds, and basically everything I wasn't carrying on me to this happening twice in 2 or 3 days.

You're victim of yourself. You leave behind you carts..

Just walk back, get your cart and go home. How hard can it be.
We've never lost any items due to carts. And we have 6 carts. It's even possible to dupe the cart content.
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

if the items existed on the map 30 minutes before the crash then they aren't gone, they're just wherever they used to be. Most you can lose is whatever you had in your inventory and put down somewhere, and anything you produced in the last 30 minutes

That doesn't make any sense. As I said in another thread, the cart was empty when the server came back up. Saying it's impossible for it to eat items doesn't make it impossible. Twice now I've had items that I had in a cart vanish into thin air, but the cart did not vanish. The cart's position reverted to an older position, but the items were not in the the cart or in the world anywhere they had previously been.

And yet, I did just find a cart with logs in it in the woods, where I had the cart some time AFTER I had unloaded the containers and planted the farms (which didn't get saved). Unless someone else just left a cart with logs in it out here, it apparently saved another copy of the cart complete with (different) contents... Why it would have saved that and saved its contents there, and yet also saved the cart without contents earlier somewhere else without saving the changes to that sector is bizarre. It's like it saved different sectors of the world at different times, resulting in a second cart, but if it DOES save cart contents, then I don't have a clue where the containers and stuff I loaded into the cart went because they should have either been at the same sector the first cart was at (or in that cart), or where that cart came from (and there was nothing there).
