Now that I have thought about this some more, I am not so sure that coin pouches are more than an aesthetic necessity.

Given that one bar of metal takes up one slot of inventory space, and one bar can be turned into 99, or 100 into one bar, it makes sense that 100 coins takes up one slot.

Really, cast iron coins are very low value, so you would not want to be carrying hundreds of them around. Once we have a real economy working, these coins would be passing hand to hand in small amounts. Would you walk around with more than a few dolars in coins IRL?

Of course, today we have notes, but that is where more valuable coins come in. Steel coins, as the most expensive, are pretty blooming valuable. A thousand of those would be a small fortune, the like of which you should have to store in a chest somewhere under lock and key. Quite simply, its not walking around money. Fortunes need to be protected, which will become easier once we get lockable doors/chests/guard dogs? etc.

I think the ability to carry around a high value in coins will in part be made possible by the introduction of higher metals. If the devs make it so that a vein of gold is very hard to find in a mine, and indeed is only 'loaded' into mine at all on a random chance, like other particular mineral veins (hence aiding trade), then gold will be a highly valuable substance indeed. Who knows? It might be that a single gold coin will end up being worth fifty, a hundred, or even several hundred steel coins. Likewise, a single precious stone (perhaps needed for the creation of certain unique weapons/objects) might be worth even more.

I am all for a pouch of some kind for holding coins, if it can be done in a way that reduces clutter. But a magical 'bag of holding' that you can somehow stuff a thousand coins into seems unrealistic to me.

Most importantly, while a 1000 coin pouch or some such would certainly be convenient, I think it mitigates the danger inherit in being 'rich'. A rich player is likely to be a strong player. If they can carry around their entire fortune on their person then they don't have to invest in the kind of security that is realistically necessary. This would work against a more co-operative style play. IRL, secured wealth requires that you are a member of a social group, perhaps elevated to some kind of aristocracy, who can afford to have serious defenses/vaults constructed, or perhaps a member of a more communistic group who share in security/work. Of course, you can still go solo and 'bury'/'hide' your gold. But I think it is a bad idea to let people just walk around with all of it.

Just a quick something. Maybe for the last few days of this map the devs could make the amount of coins held in one slot infinte so we can stock up on much needed metals. Or add the "Ark" idea...

I think a special inventory "pouch" for maybe four or five stacks of coins could work. Plus similar pouches for seeds, tools, flour, or just about anything.

Btw, I can't help but think that the backpack is underpowered. Compared to a quiver, that holds 80 slots worth of arrows, the meager 8 slots added by the pack seem worthless. I thought a pack should at least double the standard inventory...

How about a fisherman's vest which would have million pockets, and would be like walking around with a chest on your back? ;)

Ya but 40 arrows would use 80 slots.

I think a "wallet" doesn't make much sense given the approximate technology level, but I love the idea of the coin bag, tool belt, seed bag, key ring, etc.

I do agree that we need another metal for currency though, part of the requirement of a currency in economic theory is it must be a rare commodity. Otherwise anyone can just pick it up off the streets and use it. This is the problem our metals suffer from now (especially having infinite mines with the ability to build an infinite number). It would be great to have silver an gold that appears in extremely limited quantities (1 silver ore per 100 iron ore, 1 gold ore per 1000 iron ore). Make silver and gold only worthwhile as magic and inert jewelry(which could provide special stat bonuses) and all of a sudden you have an amazing trading currency.
