Every foraging item except chantrelle is small enough to be concealed by the graphic from any tree, and even then that's because the chantrelle spreads out it's graphic to a 2x2 to 3x3 square. I'd prefer not to walk by and lose out on needed resources, just like i'd prefer not to get ambushed by an NPC i have no hope of defeating.

Dude, give it up.
Well what is this that I can't see

Well I am death, none can excel

I agree fully with making herbs visible beyond trees but as for players and deliberately hidden items? Perception, intellect, and stealth should all be checked to be able to detect this without going behind the tree or structure they are hidden behind, and the item should have a variable determining the value of its hidden status from the last person who dropped it.

I think hidden objects add both to the games realism, and increase the challenge, which is a good thing. As a new player I'm not finding it at all difficult to find enough of the objects that might be hidden behind trees, such as the stringy taproots I am surviving on. Knowing that an unseen bear might suddenly pounce out on me increases the excitement of the game.

I would like to point out that anyone could implement that functionality by modding the client. It's not something we can enforce or fight. If you don't want to display the images, you don't have to, so in Machenoid's defense (while I agree with jack and sabinati that hiding behind stuff is fun and good), there's not that much we can do about it. We are however considering several options for hard stealth with perc+exploration rolls and what-not, which means the client failing the roll won't get the object data for the hidden player at all.

Alright many people hide a chest behind a diffrent object. Or if your getting revenge you hide behind something then pounce removing this would make theft go up and make ppl even more annoyed.

Having those glaring yellow lines everywhere all the time would be ugly and annoying although sometimes when I'm trying to manage something behind a tree or pick up some straw behind half grown wheat, I wish I could hold alt or something to make them appear, so that I don't have to spend 5 minutes jiggling my character into just the right spot so the lines come up but to not block the clicking at the same time.
I would suggest only having items show up like this. this would make item management easier but you could still hide trash and characters, bears and herbs would be unaffected, none of which I believe need adjusting.

Got the same problem while offline-planning fields in a Dwarf Fortress style. It looks just like I want it on a scheme, but I can`t actually reach crops and small containers behind a tree or palisade. For now it`s about symmetry, not stealth or item hiding.

Here we have a bunch of solutions already, but just in case.. There`s a nice option in Stonesense (DS isometric visualiser): it crops bitmap of a tall object to several lower pixels. We still can see a layout, but now can also see everything hidden behind the obstacles.

Well, having said that, it would be nice to have buildings that aren't cookie-cutter clones of each other. Being able to build individual internal and external walls, perhaps with stone bases for extra support, or glass windows, would be a huge improvement. A door on the north side of a building would be something new and interesting, that's for sure.
