Not only Villages should decay, but claims too. Seeing a claim you can't enter without criminal acts that's been empty for months sucks.

And the fact that the only way to remove a claim is by building a village on it, which can never be removed, is salting the wound.

I like the dream-feeding idea.
Part of the reason for the suggestion was to create a steady demand for linen and steel (maybe other things as well).

Maybe the suggestion could be combined with Kimyas "repair connected walls anywhere":
Every autority symbol connected to a village has a decay, but the decay can be "payed" at the idol (proportional repair cost to the number of banners/statues)

I like the connected wall repair. I see where you are going with the linen, but it seems like a bit too much make-work to me. As far as steel goes, we just need repairable armor and degradable weapons, and there will be plenty of demand for steel.

Idol's and statues don't have to need alot of resources for repair. 1 linen repair every week or 2. They should stay pink for days and red for a week or 2 at least. More demand for linen might be a good thing, more demand for steel, especially for a village that trades for it, is painful.

Very true, at least as long as non-mine villages has nothing to trade that the mining villages cannot make themselves likely more easily - maybe have some benevolent spirits (anyone remember the mention of domovoi?) that abhor mining and industry (oh noes, elfy spirits), and will not grant their treehugging powers/crafting skills to villages/crafting locations within some radius of a mine?

second that

thats the reason i like the idea of putting dreams into that things instead of repairing. there could be a big induction for the dreams, or a long endurance.
or just a very slow decay, so that you just have to repair them in about 4 weeks.

otherwise it would be quite annoying if you have a two-week holiday xD

I like the idea of decaying authority objects. What about this:

Once a village claim is placed it requires soem sort of upkeep or sacrifice. It can be in the form of dreams or animal carcases (can even be a ritual) that you have to pay to keep the village claim from deactivating.

While the village claim is active all of the connected statues and banners don't decay. Once the village deactivates due to not paying the upkeep then everything should start to decay. The banners should decay in like 3-4 days, the statues in 7 days and the village claim in 2 weeks.

If a village member logs in during the decay stage they should be able to repair the village claim and then start paying upkeep. If they want to preserve the authority objects they would have to repair the ones connected to the village circle first and work their way out.

Also there should be an option for the lawspeaker and chieftain to deactivate and remove authority objects. They could interact with the object and set it to deactivate and a timer of say 12 hours would start. Fort safety sake both the lawspeaker and chieftain should be required to do it just like you need 5 people to create the village.

Once the banner is offline it could be left to decay like any other object, be destroyed or be put online by either the lawspeaker or chieftain of the village.

Also whenever the village claim goes offline the authority should be gone and the area should be lootable by anyone and anyone should eb able to destroy the objects. Only villagers should be able to pay upkeep/online the objects. That way some random passerby can't get the benefit of a vilalge claim and auth objects already placed, but they can destroy and rebuild.

At first I wasn't in love with this idea, but looking over it all, there's something really great here.
Let's summarize this, then:

-Idols store and consume dreams.
-If an idol runs out of dreams, all that town's auth items no longer work, and stay off until more dreams are provided.
-When a town is out of dreams, auth items decay normally, and may indeed be vulnerable to attack as well.
-One can repair all authority objects by applying the necessary resources to the idol.

If I might add:
-Enemies of the town can "defile" the idol to consume a dream from it.
-The amount of dreams that can be stored in an idol, and the rate of consumption, varies depending on the number of auth items. For instance, a lone idol with a banner or something uses only one or two dreams a day and can store ten or more dreams, giving it three or four days of storage time; a large town with dozens of items may use ten dreams a day, and can store 20 dreams, meaning that they must spend proportionally more time feeding the village. This prevents single players or very small towns from easily encompassing large areas.
-You may attack people violating your idol without rage.

Hows all that sound? We not only get rid of junk towns, but we even get a simple form of combat! A group might run into a town and start defiling, a lengthy process, and must either fight off defenders or finish before being noticed. Only then can they actually start attacking the viliage structure...
Surprise.
