I assume that the ram would be covered, which should protect well against arrows.

A catapult already has an advantage over a battering ram - You get to stay at a distance and not worry so much about archers. A battering ram would probably be better against gates, and easier to make. Making proper stone walls limited to a king (Which is stupid in and of itself) is stupid. Its putting a stone on another stone repeated a few times. Last I checked some pointless crown wasn't required. Also last time I checked kings didn't go around handcrafting walls.

yep. potjehs right about the ram though

Didn't occur to me. Would still be useful in you having more time to leg it if they storm out at you, though :P

hmm maybe i expressed myself wrong.
My idea is that the ram can only harm palisade walls. Catapult can damage brickwalls and cut through palisades like butter. Maybe for stone walls there should be added trebuchets to the siege towers as mentioned aboce

I add this to OP

And my idea is that this is stupid. Go chop down a tree, but a slight point on it and get a couple dozen people to ram it into a wall. Now remember that this is just a tree trunk. A proper ram is constructed for the sole purpose of ramming shit down, and would be much more effective at it. Tell me again that Battering rams shouldn't affect bricks.

yes, for taking out tougher things, they would reinforce it with metal tips, and sometimes make a wheeled covering to move it faster and protect from archers (although a few flaming arrows and/or a cauldron of boiling pitch tended to fix that little problem)

Nobody ever used a ram to break through wall, they're for gates. Defensive walls commonly had dirt core, which absorbed shock and made it pretty much impossible to tear down the wall unless you start at the top.
