Really, all thieves need to do is alt vault it for a few days, which is what happens anyway.

maybe if the item is in someone's inventory it could track to their hearthfire and you could summon the item instead of the perpetrator

I think I suggested something similar to that before. So yeah, I think item summoning is an excellent idea. If it doesn't leave a summonable scent, thief survivability will increase by orders of magnitude.

i mean, you should still have the option to kill them. it would just be nice to be like, hey i just want my stuff back.

Yeah, I'm sorry if I was unclear. I was just saying that the vast majority of rangers wouldn't execute the thief and leave a murder scent if they can retrieve the goods without leaving any scents.
