What if, pre-village, you wanted help with building your walls from another player?

I see your point. I'd say party or kin exceptions would fix that up.

Oh you're right. I failed to realise this was a suggestion to alter game mechanics. My bad.

I suppose it would set us behind a fair bit and prevent this griefing we're seeing. Except that it wouldn't. I could just lay a claim outside your claim and start building walls around your shit anyway. It would be a lot more work to grief. I would also stop a village from being able to build their walls before they manage to extend their village claim that far.

Building brick walls for a city is already a major pitfa. This would make it even more ridiculously prohibitive. Otoh, this, with the 'kingdom' spires that I believe it was potjeh who proposed giving a psuedo claim to a very large area would be a viable way to allow such construction of walls and still enforce the need to develop the village claim over the walls later.

Given that, I support.

Yea but then they could just build a wall around your claim area.

How about instead of disallowing players to build walls anywhere but towns and claims there are 3 new rules for walls:
1. The game will now allow you to close off a wall segment unless there is a gate on it
2. You don't need a key to leave an enclosed area.
3. Allow for players to remove wall segments if the gate is on their claim. This way you can just extend your claim to remove the walls.

While there's some sense in forbidding locked-off areas, figuring out what a locked-off area is is a bit of a challenging problem for the server. I suppose it could just check to see if a square of wall will make a complete loop without any gates, but even that may be a bit computationally intensive. Likewise, It would be difficult to determine what an "inside" area is without making it possible to somehow sneak in a gate from outside.

We do need a more effective way for wall-owners to tear down walls easily.

If you don't have the permissions to someone else's claim, it is impossible to build there. It has been this way for quite a while.

And it would prevent any village with huge terrain from making walls before their huge claim or village totem is up, which costs over 100k lp

True, but the individuals would be able to safely wall themselves in individually. You probably don't need (sorry, edit:) group walls until after you have the totem, anyway.

Perhaps the good plan it would be to extend your claim or your walls against the water? Then they could not encircle you.

Just make walls "deletable" on your claim.
