my beef is mostly that "these bunch of guys happen to do things in the same or a similar way" is not a standard.

It can be referred to as a pseudo standard at best, but until it's documented and accepted by multiple industry participants I would not consider the practice "standardized" and would try to use some other word with less connotations.

Yes, that. But also which abbreviation to use, and why those abbreviation are the most intuitively and meaningful to the largest player base.
