With multiple hands and some tea you can create a pretty long road in a day. If you span that over a week or so you get an epic road  .

I like this idea more

yes that is entirely in character for you, but its also what we would call a false dilemma. nothing saying we cant have both with a bit of adjustment

You want something for nothing, the ability to transport bulk quantities of goods overland without resource investment relative to the distance traveled.

I think hauling carts through a forest does not strike me as an easy task (I know, realism again, you don't care but some people do)

I think if you can use a plow to make a dirt road to where you want to go then that's pretty minimal and encourages roads to form up between places people travel between regularly, it encourages people to encounter each other when traveling, it works on a whole bunch of levels that I think I'd enjoy a lot more.

Also, abolish teleportation...

Despite your insistence that dirt roads and faster carts are incompatible, coming up with a method to have the two work together was fairly simple. Have carts drain stamina at walk speed on rough terrain. and that was just offhand, no doubt there are others

roads also have more uses than cart speed - they provide direction, a clear path, prevent decay, aid running

This could work.

I insist nothing, in fact I didn't even suggest that. You pretended I suggested that and now you're insisting that I suggested that, possibly attempting a straw man argument?

They are compatible, there is no reason you could not have both. I would like to see dirt roads, if it were to become possible to move carts across forest floor as fast as across a dirt road then I would like to have it in some way less beneficial than building a dirt road if you were going to make the trip more than a couple of times.

Is that agreeable enough? I do not want your candy, just leave it on the table, it will be safe I promise

If I knew that roads would get me Goods faster, I would build them, but even then. Moving faster with a cart is best...

one could divide the areas in easy (grassland, heaths) and hard underground.

you could travel in walkspeed on the easy terrain, but still have to crawl in forest and on mountains...
