vikingdragons, yes, that's what I meant - rafts (maybe of different sizes) are moving surfaces. a small one is e.g. 3x3, so you can either fit 9 people (1 ferryman and 8 passengers) or the said ferryman and 4 carts there. a larger one could be e.g. 5x5. or you could string small rafts together to 6x3 or 9x3 or 6x6. they would of course loose speed this way, 3x3 going at run, 6x3 at walk, 9x3 and 6x6 at crawl.
second the idea that an empty raft can be moved. maybe even allowing to load a raft on a cart to make long distance travel feasible, together with beasts of burden. on land, you'd have a yoked ox to pull a cart, carrying your raft and a chest or two. at a shore you'd get the raft floating, pull the cart on the raft and tether the ox there, then ferry over. on the other shore you'd yoke the ox back to the cart, load the raft into it and keep going.

stop trying to brown nose me dammit! and how do you fit a 3x3 into a 2x2 cart??? besides, my plan is for rafts to be simple and slow. not great for exploring, but good for ferrying stuff around. It would also help out all those island dwellers who cant get animals over the water! the barge would be the large raft, with a cargo hold and a large deck. (PS updating barge)

um, just put the raft on top of the cart - a cart has no roof or anything. no need to get worked up I'm just thinking green and don't want people to cut wood for rafts at every river like no tomorrow.
although fitting many carts on a small raft ain't working then. my bad a raft of 3x3 would then fit a single cart of 2x2, 2 cows 2x1 each and the ferryman. (or 2 chests and 1 cow etc.)
also I'm not sure if there are any large inhabited islands out there, but just being able to get a cow over a river would be great.

I'm usually thinking of a barge as , but google says is also a barge (I'd call that a pontoon).
