You'd spend a good couple of hours digging out a channel all the way across the wilderness, and then it'd take a single miscreant to fill in a portion of it and it'd be no better than having to carry your boat across anyway. Not to mention decay...

That would not fit the game setting.

Nor does digging water trenches really. Anyway, the main result will be someone seeing a trench as they pass along the river, blocking it off by filling a section in with dirt, and following it up to your settlement where they'll steal your stuff / kill your sons / rape your daughters, etc. :evil:

Right, because the ancients had no canals viaducts or aqueducts?

I'm not so much referring to the time period as how this would make the game too easy because of being able to simply import water by digging a channel for it, as well as making the wells utterly useless. I am personally 5 minutes from a river, but I still oppose the idea because with the addition of water flowing straight up to my doorstep, I'd have every resource I needed except fir boughs (and I'm planting firs so that's a work in progress anyway). Too easy.

Also, this is hardly a canal we're talking about here, from what I gather about this thread it's a shallow ditch which you expect the water to flow down. What about hills? The game has no physical depth except for cliffs which don't really make sense since they link equal-height ground anyway. If you wanted to build a canal to flow down to you, you'd first need to have hills to let it do so.

Also, if someone fills in a section of trench, what happens to the trench now separated from the water? How long does the water inside last? What happens to it?

terraforming would be real nice, both water canals and changing cliffs.

terraforming options have already been suggested in other threads:
1. build shallow water from deep water = artificial fords, although J&L mentioned bridge-building;
2. excavate deep water from shallow water = moats, probably too easy to use for griefing;
3. excavate shallow water from ground = fishing ponds, irrigation channels. nice idea. maybe prevent paved, swamp and mountain areas from digging;
4. build ground from shallow water = combines with 1. to artificial dams, probably too easy to use for griefing.
sadly, those threads deteriorated without J&L taking notice of them.

I like the idea of irrigation, and as an added bonus, wading over a trench would allow the player to shake off a boar or a bear.

Are you sure dude? We had the same setup on World 2 and we were fine. Lift your boat carry it to the edge, drop it in the water, right click boat and 'avast', no problem.

Nah I've tried that to no avail. Also tried fishing and filling buckets from it, no luck on either count. I don't want to try swimming in it :p

I like this idea, time to make it hard and useless to use

Now here how ill do it (if i was a dev)
~add trenches to the game
*trenches are shallow water only
*trenches will take ALOT of stam to make
*trenches will take down hungry via 2%
*trenches will take 15 sec to make each

AND the big awsome last one you all will love and hate

*trenches decay rate 2 hits

Problem over (walks away)
