That hit the nail on the head. Why not have fords randomly situated along rivers? People can walk through them, livestock can walk through them, boats can cross them and these new-fangled wagon thingys can cross them. Its historical, easy to implement coz the tile type is already there. The only downside is that unless they want to go through and re-do all the rivers I think it will have to wait until the next map wipe. Too bad really.

Sorry for necroing, but I was just thinking about bridges today as well. Some towns have rivers going through them, while I know it is there choice to have placed themselves there bridges would be nice to have. It makes moving around easier, being able to move a wagon across a river without a ram would be convenient for large trades and just general exploration. Of course the cost to build a bridge should be rather steep (such as a rather large amount of boards/stones/bricks/and some type of metal). Of course bridges should only cover x by x over a river so they cannot be used to bridge over the larger lakes in the game. And two signs are placed on either side of the river both requiring mats to be entered to build the bridge, paved on either end for the initial support.

You could make it so that a raft with a wagon loaded cannot pass under the bridge(s) that are built over rivers. Which could be used for greiving heavily populated grids which would kind of suck, but seem more realistic. Or people could use such a tactic to demand some sort of payment to beable to move through a claimed area or simply make you go a long way around to hinder you from exploring their area.

Not only would this be a cosmetic boost for some villages/towns/cities, but it would provide added functionality. Being able to fish from the bridge if things spawn in the river instead of having to haul a boat out, wagons passing over, carts, etc.

The idea of using fords after a new would could replace the bridge once the world rolls over. Or even in new grids that may be added to this. Of course bridges should only cover x by x over a river so they cannot be used to bridge over the larger lakes in the game. And two signs are placed on either side of the river both requiring mats to be entered to build the bridge, paved on either end for the initial support.

Just something that came to mind while browsing forums at work.

The problem with H&H geography is that the geography is unreal. The rivers in H&H are actually really small. There are much more rivers than in real life making the rivers the main roads of H&H(boating is easier than walking too).

Bridges would be cool, though.

Constructing a four part raft, getting the wagon and cattle over on said raft and then disassembling the raft is easier then it would be (it wont be easy, but you all know what I mean) to construct a bridge (which is usuable assuming it doesn't decay to an unusable state [which it should until it eventually crumbles] and require maintenance which it should) at any time to walk across? Even a wooden bridge, which may not support as much weight as a stone/brick bridge (can support a cart being pulled, not a wagon with a animal hauling it) would be nice.

However in a city, you can attatch statues on the corner pieces of the bridge, hang banners off the sides? Would be more cosmetics then use at that point, but regardless, would look nice.

I'd consider the rivers being "really small" as more affordable and less time consuming to have a bridge then to simply boat across everytime. Especially if you don't live river side, but frequently need to cross the same river.

Simple rope ferry(raft) perhaps for starters.
