An alternative I just thought of: Make trees fall in the direction that you are facing. So if you approach the tree from the south it falls to the north etc.

i dont when the tree is only really aproachable from 1 side or 2 sides and neither is good for letting the log fall opposite to it

trees normally don't grow when there's any obstacle next to them. this referrs also to the map-created trees
