What's with all the hate? If it's a bad idea, the devs obviously won't like it. And if the devs like it, it might be good...
Surprise.

I personally like the idea and tried to start a thread to continue discussing it in what had a chance of being a more civilized environment. It didn't quite work that way. Perhaps the suggestions or disdain that came from this thread will help the devs make a decision. Either way, it's in their hands now.

Actually baby making could help deal with the alt-spam issue and make death a bit more of a preventative measure. If natural born hearthlings got some sort of bonus over newly created characters, it would put a bit more focus onto keeping your character and its babies alive. The rape issue is pretty easy to circumnavigate by taking sex out of the equation. Instead have a male and female character meet at the hearthfire of the player who wants a baby and do some sort of voodoo dance and poof, hearth brat.

After all, animals in this game seem to spring from the earth (as provided by the mighty hearth gods) there's no reason to tempt fate and traumatize noobs. It also keeps the game’s rating at ‘Teen’ which is probably good for Jorb and Loftar’s marketing plans.

I was thinking that you could institute a larval stage where the hearth brat was an inventory item that had to be fed food, and maybe worn like a papoose in the backpack/quiver slot. After a certain amount of time the kid should ripen and vanish, to be selectable when you reincarnate. Though it probably takes more programming to assign an item to someone when it’s not being held, I like the idea of combat oriented characters being able to foster out their hearth brats to the more productivity minded players so that after making a baby you can leave it with someone and go back to happily thieving or conquering the known world. Then it can be your sneaky ace in the hole, when you’re gacked and yet a son or daughter of yours rises to take revenge.

You can also use this as a vehicle to give characters last names. You could attach a specific bonus to a last name related to the strength of the founder, so powerful players can encourage others to take on their name. Thus the Loki name might be one of powerful thieves, while the Rangewells might get a ranger’s bonus. This gives you a chance to make an epic impression on the face of the game world (if you can encourage everyone to raise say, little Goons) that might even last long after you move on to other games.

This is a god awful idea and I hope nothing even remotely like this is seriously considered. Babies? Really?
