I'm kinda partial to some sort of shamanistic/pagan "magic". Ceremonies or rituals to inspire allies or demoralize enemies, as opposed to more blatantly supernatural stuff like the haste spells and lightning traps in the OP. All subtle and spiritual-like, in that non-literal psychosomatic "faith moves mountains" kind of way. Beats me how you'd properly implement it though, having everybody running around invoking sacred ancestral oaths before they go beat up a fox would be kinda lame.
