Metal saws so you need to cut down less trees.
Plus all the nice tools which speed up your daily chores (pickaxe for chipping stones, scythe to harvest, cauldron where you don't have to wait some minutes for water to boil).
So yes, i think a way that stops monopolizing mines is not a bad idea.
This idea remembers me somehow of the idea a while back which was about the players having to keep up the structural integrety of the mine.
So it could make sense that you have a mine, but instead of now that every tile yields ore there are veins.
And you have to support the ceiling of the shafts you drill, or they'll collapse (and maybe kill you in the process).
So you won't end up with a mine like now: having enough space to park the not yet invented airbus dreamliner in it.
