Developer Thoughts on PvP

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Yeah, I know, just pointing out that it hadn't slipped my mind that accepting newbies would be a detriment in many places. Villages in their current state are little more than glorified group claims from what I can make out.

What'd be really interesting would be statistics which show how many newbies never click the trapdoor. A readme is a great idea, but if a feature is important to newbies, they need to trip over it. Honestly, charter stones may as well not exist in their current state.

And therein lies the problem: you have no clue what you are talking about.

And before you say it, yes, I realize that crossroads are a form of security by means of not needing keys and what have you, and yes, I know what hirdsmen are. I also recall a lot of discussion about the merits of teleportation and, I believe, a desire on the devs part to remove it at some point, which would render most of that moot. They are still little more than glorified claims.

The idol and the banners are just a small part of what a village is, the real meat of it is the people in it.

And this is what I meant by the distinction of the game and the metagame which so many people tend to ignore.

A "Village" in Haven and Hearth is a game mechanic. "People acting in unison" is not what I mean when I say "Village".

Well maybe you should say village claim then. Seriously, how can people *not* misunderstand you when you're doing your darnest to be imprecise? Because when people use a name of a RL organization they usually refer to the whole thing rather than just the physical building it occupies.

But going back to the "problem", what the hell is wrong with that? Why do we have to have pile up useless bloat on village mechanics just for the sake of bloat?

It's like everything I say is being demonstrated for me. I assumed that people would understand that "Village" meant "Village" and not "The general metagaming concept of players working in unison towards an end goal within the same vicinity", but no, apparently not.

This may astonish you, but it's actually possible to add features to a game that are beneficial to the game and which improve the game. Villages as a game mechanic hold great potential for future development because, well, this is an MMO. In a game with a heavy emphasis on (anti)social interaction, additional social interaction tools are often a good thing.

by the way, the ability to accurately convey your meaning in fewer words is far more impressive than flowery walls of text

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

I try, Jackard. But then I end up saying things such as "Brevity is not my Forte" and "Villages" and people get confused.
