Couple ideas on this.

When a player drowns, they should lose a moderate to high amount of HHP, and either wash up on the nearest/nearby shore, or get teleported to their HF. While I was smart enough to heed warnings and swimming has yet to affect me, I think the freedom of movement would add quite a bit to the games. Yes, we have boats, but nobody wants to lug their boat around over supergrids. Let people cross rivers with 25-30 con (look at how long it takes the average player to get that high con. Do NOT forget they nerfed bread and the amount of wildlife, particularly Aurochs), and if they fail, don't punish them with guaranteed death, and complete loss of items.

Just my ideas to make swimming a more useful skill, because right now, anybody worth their salt doesn't own it, and those that do have a death wish. I thought it was supposed to be useful.

What is the actual reason behind swimming being so lethal and dangerous? I sometimes get the idea that this is some sort of experiment whether one is capable of following given rules (DO NOT SWIM) or not. IMHO it doesn't add, but remove from the openness of the world. Natural barriers are nice, but now that you can even carry cattle over rivers the idea of instakill swimming seems outdated.

Oh, and my character drowned 2 hours before World 2 Apocalypse. Please restore him

Swimming

Postby Fluffy » Tue Jun 01, 2010 6:24 pm

Swimming is too deadly right now, and slightly unrealistic. Human bodies are naturally buoyant, so why do hearthlings sink and drown?

I believe swimming should be redone so that, as long as you aren't wearing any heavy metal armors on, your hearthling won't drown and die when you run out of stamina, but rather be knocked out and swept downstream a few hundred tiles. If in a lake, just washed up on a shore somewhere else.

it is a merged thread of all the complaints, critiques, whinings and bitchings about swimming. Several ideas on how to change swimming in there too.

Swimming and Boat Mechanics Critque

Postby SueTheCake » Tue Jun 29, 2010 4:51 pm

The way the game responds in regards to swimming and boats were always extremely annoying to me, but seeing as I didn't mess around with nautical travel I didn't pay much attention to how illogical they are currently.

One of my fellow villagers was taking me on a trip to his old campsite to gather materials using a boat when he sees a herd of cows/rams and decided to chuck stone at them from the boat to get LP. That's all fine and dandy, until he pulls away and waits for them to be docile once more in the middle of a river. Then he suddenly logs off. I'm stuck sitting in the middle of a river with no way to get out. At the time in question I didn't even think of logging off and respawning at my hearth fire, which is partly my fault for being stupid.

So, y'know, I can't just hop over and gain control. So I'm sitting there for 10 minutes slowly starving to death when I think
"Oh! Swimming!". Sure I heard bad things about swimming but since the boat was 2 feet away from shore I didn't think a shirt made of grass and a pair of pants would hold me down much.

I hop out of the boat and swim not even 3 inches and drown, what the hell? Did swimming suddenly take more effort than sprinting with 60 pounds of gear or what? Why is this so tiring when I was nearly naked?

By far, ridiculous things have happened to me on H&H, but this is the most aggrivating and annoying.

Agreed to the hop over to gain control part. Thought about it just a few days ago myself.
To the other part: Never buy swimming!!! Everybody should know by now that the devs intend to let swimming stay as deadly as it currently is (or maybe are to lazy to fix it, because there is just no way they could not be aware of the issue with all the constant whining...)

I agree.
Being able to take control of a boat if the driver disconnects or travels to their hearth fire would be great.
