So basically, "tree decay." Set it up so that they will revert to their original state unless you keep them fed with dreams/whatever, similar to repairing a wall.

The way I imagine it, druids should be able to improve the strength of any, and all trees, to withstand chopping down. As their heart trees would be mixed up among the regular trees, they would want the forest as a whole to maintain its existance. If all the regular trees were cut down, it would make it obvious what trees were heart trees.

I would be against this one. Being able to make oneself somewhat immortal by storing your heart in a tree is a freaking massive advantage. If, beyond that, you allowed the possibility of simply removing your heart from the heart tree, the potential downside would be much reduced. Druids should think carefully about their forest home, and work hard to protect it If a forest became threatened with destruction, the druid should not simply be able to remove their heart tree so easily. Else they aren't really tied to the forest by necessity, and hence won't be so likely to care for its continued, long-term existence.

having an unlockable skill with this effect'd be nice, but hopefully there are no set player classes, H&H is undeniably funner with you being a unique, yet still average male.

I meant using items instead of LP, but for that matter, there's no reason why you couldn't have decay with the LP system.

As for moving one's heart tree (or the heart inside, at least), give heart tree's a range of influence which could be used to do various things, such as buffing nearby normal trees, creating the previously suggested special undergrowth, or moving the heart to an appropriately prepared tree. The druid wouldn't be able to remove their heart, but they could teleport it between empty heart trees. If the druid wants to move very far, they have to spend resources to increase their current heart tree's range. To make sure one can't rapidly jump around, there could either be a long timer on the 'teleport heart' option, or the heart tree could be made normal once a heart is moved from it. The point is to give druids some chance of escape in the event an overwhelming number of people decide to start a new village on top of their forest.

How's about we keep the heart tree idea but instead of making the druid immortal until someone decides to cut down his tree and BAM, DAED. How's about making his tree the source of all his magic instead? Perhaps mark one of the trees in a forest with some sort of ritual making a tree there the druid's heart tree, should said tree get cut down, they would lose all their magic.

yeah i dunno about this entire "heart tree" thing, it really sounds kind of overboard. you realize it is identical in function to the phylactery of a lich? Any features so powerful that you need to give them special restrictions like spending LP seem dubious.

id be satisfied just to see small, simple skills that do stuff like:
    - strengthen existing trees
    - entangle trap
    - thorn trap
    - create forest tile
    - maybe an animal companion
I think what we should focus on are useful abilities that are small and inexpensive. Easier to implement, too.
