Sorry, on-topic: From another thread involving this sort of idea, i remember some discussion about balancing the available storage space/item slots between a stack of crates and two cupboards side-by-side. I guess if the stacked crates have much less storage slots than two adjoining cabinets would, you still get the benefit of A) Mobility, being able to move the crates while filled, and B) being able to keep the crates outside.

(I haven't played in a while, but is it true that decay is a thing of the past? if so, ignore (B))

Decay on claims is mostly gone. But not entirely. (Some things still will decay)
