This may be somewhat off-topic, I think we should have burial system too.

I mean, though some cultures do so, why do we have to leave dead bodies to rot on ground? It's creepy as hell.
What a shame, he was a good fish. What a rotten way to be filleted.

maybe ghosts could view the area around their corpse until the body was buried?

Any carryable should be able to be buried.

Lead-lined steel coffins for powerful enemies. Gold coffins for kings.

i think normal wooden coffins would be fine but mausoleums might be nice, not sure if they fit the setting though

actually now that I think about it instead of burials and tombstones i would prefer funeral pyres and stone cairns/memorials, they seen more appropriate to ancestor worship and the setting in general

coffins feel way too modern and wild-westish

The Game Over screen information could be added to website inside the profile since some of the data is already there - except the cause of death.

And while the instant logoff on death might come closest to what we in RL will most likely experience when the time comes - this is a game...
So since a spirit is already leaving the body at the end of the line the control of it could be turned over to the player, giving the following abilities:

Ability to haunt the place (where you died) and cause (eg. player) of death, also (in case the fresh corpse chould be able to be lifted at some point) the current location of the corpse. Range being ~20 tiles from these locations, with the ability to whisper in local chat (with 4 tiles range). Travel between the locations (which might be identical in case you managed to drown, or different in case someone killed your toon and moved the corpse - lifting of undecayed corpses would be needed for this) could be implemented like TP to HF, Village, Charterstone. Duration of effect could be till the corpse turnes into a skeleton, so later it may be shortened in case we get eg. ability to burn bodies (lift it and dump onto a fire) or burial rites.

This would enable the player of dead toon to vent a bit for more lolz and drama, and could provide us with some epic screenshots.
