That's the thing; there are no rules, save those which the interface sets upon you. Griefing is punishable only by players, not by the devs. If you arn't strong enough to kill, or don't know somebody who is, then you're at a loss to stop those who would disturb your peace.

The problem with the trees is known as the tragedy of the commons. Communal resources are used up by everybody, and very few people dedicate the time and effort it takes to plant more trees, at least public ones. Therefore, people put trees on their own private farms, and cultivate them for their own use.
