Sounds like I have a different definition of grind to you as well... Maybe my internal definition is not correct... I'm certainly having trouble expressing it concisely...

I consider hunting for the sole purpose of raising your other stats or your ability to perform in PvP to be grinding, but hunting to get raw materials to not be grinding...

I don't consider mining to be grinding at the moment because people do it for the metal... I consider it dull and unpleasant, but not grindy... You don't start out shit at mining and mine more to get better at mining, you mine more because you want more metal...

Is that making sense?

I believe I can sum this up in a few words:

Doing something for the LP, and only the LP, is grinding.
Doing something for materials, profits, fun, etc., is not. No matter how boring.

Sounds like a decent definition of it to me, but I'd consider gathering resources in a way unpleasant to you for the sole purpose of trade would be sort of grindey too.

How about this:
Grinding is doing a repetitious and boring task for the sake of rewards unrelated to the task itself.

So weaving baskets for lp, and not for baskets, is grinding.
mega-harvesting chantrelles to trade for a steel sword is at least grindy.

That close to the general idea of "grinding"?

what would you call the following?

harvesting a field one/two click per tile
making a road one click per tile
building a wall several clicks per tile one section at a time
repairing a wall one click per tile
and so on

...annoying as hell?
I wouldn't personally call it grinding, though.

That is true. I think people have slightly different understandings of what "grinding" is, but because they are similar, it can lead to misunderstandings.

So, forgive me for putting words into your mouth, but you feel that "grinding" means "doing something boring and repetitious, for any reason"?

well thats more the original sense but if you look at it in terms of gaming then your definition would be the correct one

example of a game that dealt with grind rather well would be Guild Wars. gear or level wasnt important; developing strategies with your team and mixing abilities was. positioning, targeting, timing everything and working together to overcome challenges

~90% of the game took place at max level and gear

First, that...is not a verb. It is an idiom.
Second, I was trying to clarify what the verb "to grind" meant to me, and to others. Language, especially slang, and even more so gaming slang, is not restricted to a dictionary. It grows and evolves in different ways in different niches.
