Bad ideas are bad.

I hide stuff behind trees all the time, like boats and carts.

And they get stolen from behind trees all the time, too.

If you want to be able to hide something, a 'Concealment' skill should be put into the game, so you can hide yourself, other people, and objects. The current system is about as bullshit as the map generator.

but what youre asking for is bogus, because what it amounts to is invisibility. And invisibility-like stealth - aka "Hide in Plain Sight" - is always a terrible game mechanic.

And the current system is blatantly fellating the fourth wall due to the fact that it's the player's vision of the landscape that's impeded, not the vision of the character. If you want something more realistic, blank out shit that's not in the line-of-sight of a character and highlight everything hidden that isn't. That way, you can still ambush people by hiding 'behind' shit - although 'behind' wouldn't always mean 'layered behind'.

I think a more reasonable solution is to hide as another object (costumes). So you can look like a tree, rock, or some other shit. People familiar with their lands will generally notice when there's suddenly a new full grown tree in the middle of their plot I would think.

Same thing could be done with items.

I dunno, just throwing it out there.

line of sIght can be interesting but also seems to be taxing on other games that use it, moreso than pathfinding

You were talking about invisibility-from-stealth. Blame that phrase on yourself, because I can't imagine going into ridiculousness from that point.

Impeding the player's vision and then abusing that impediment as an alleged form of concealment is also a poor game mechanic, and just happens to also be unrealistic.
