A person who notices the symptoms and has access to modern medicine is very unlikely to die from worms. Which doesn't mean the chance isn't there. Incidentally, this is why ale was so popular for so long. Boiling the water removed nasty germs and bugs, while the alcohol kept them at bay afterward. Took a while for people to figure out that boiling water alone would do the trick. In the mean-time, they noticed ale chuggers died less often than water drinkers.

Heck yes. Nowadays the danger in raw meat is not the worms but the e-coli and salmonella that is endemic from factory feeding and factory processing. Nowadays almost all worms can be eliminated by taking a few doses of medicine that doesn't even make you sick. But in our era that would hardly have been the case and even you did get infested with trichinae you would be left with the damage to the tissue, after they got rid of the worms. Worms are so rare now that Western doctors often don't have a clue either how to diagnose or how to treat.
