I think player created tasks area great idea, combined with the shops potjeh suggested they could actually create a economy where trade is possible and efficient. Shops would be built by high level characters while flags could be used by people who don't have the resources to build a shop or only need one item, you should also be able to link several flags together to mark off a area and set the flag to reward anyone who builds a specified object in that area

Nah, not versatile enough. Say you're selling carrot cake, and you want boar meat, chantrelles, inkweed or a tankard for it. You'd have to set price for each item individually, and it can get to be a very long list of prices when you're selling and buying multiple different items, especially if you can set different prices for different quality levels (and you should be able to). Some kind of a currency that you use to express the value of everything you're selling and everything you're buying makes it simpler. You don't have to have actual coins, though, you can get an account balance of sorts on the stall when you sell items, and use it to buy items. If there's any change left and there's coins in the stand you get change, if not sucks to be you (you should be informed if you'll get change, naturally).
