It's not so much intentional use of Alts to claim stuff its all the players who legitimately build a little settlement and subsequently abandon it when they move to a new area or just stop playing. Wilderness spawning makes these types of camps a lot more common but it's also making the wilderness a lot less wild.

A claim should last longer then buildings though, by the time a claim disappears their should be literally nothing of value left inside it anyways. I don't see how people can go ballistic over losing claim over a patch of dirt that's completely reverted to nature. The goal should be to prevent urban-sprawl from robbing the world of its 'wild' feel, not punishing the player for not grinding. Crops and perhaps even pavement need to eventually disappear over the course of week or months to avoid an endless build up of clutter as was the case in the past world around the RoB, though I doubt this world will last long enough for things to get that bad.

Ruins would be fun anyways, and if the forests regrew then they wouldn't be useless. It'd actually be kind of cool to stumble across old villages with just their broken overgrown roads and walls left standing.

I've kind of hoped that when a new world is created, it will be done so by taking the old world, and subjecting it to a couple in-game years or decades.

I think claim upkeep would be reasonable if the claimpost required a dream a week or every month or it would be eligible for decay ticks.

I agree that eternal claims offer a problem (the brodgar scenario: the whole area is claimed, unused, and unusable), though I believe that overtaxing people on their claims would also be a problem leading to less fun from this game.
