While I do still like the idea overall, I don't like how "Afk time" it seems to be, wherein everything seems to be done in down time.

The way I see it, you should be able to do it in your 'offline' time, but very, very slowly, whereas if you are online you should have to perform some activity towardslearning it, to learn it much faster. Perhaps working the way you illustrated Spear Fishing being taught while spear fishing (should be rather quick) as opposed to the Skald's Fire (having the option of going offline ; should be slow) being very slow.

What's the exact breaking point between the research buildings and skalds/regular teaching?

I don't want to have to grind for a skill, more than just to get the LP. The advanced skills could be done like this, but the simple things, should be very easy to research.

I may not have made this clear, but it has the OPTION of being done in downtime. It can also be done while logged in.

I absolutely agree. The main reason for allowing the offline option was to address complaints of 'more grinding' by allowing some of it to be done offline, as well as allowing it to be done actively. But I think making it much slower if you're offline is an excellent idea.

You cannot teach a skill at a Research Building. They are specifically used for researching the more advanced skills, that can't be researched any other way. So the breaking point between Research Buildings and Education buildings is their use.

It is intended that the lowest tier skills (Stone Age) would be relatively trivial to research, but that's a decision that'd have to be left to the Devs, which is why specifics on that are left unaddressed in this proposal.

As long as I can get a new character to the point where he can survive quickly, I'm okay with this. Shouldn't some of the more spiritual skills, or maybe even some of the combat skills (fire and ice) be gained through meditation or prayer?

There are many different ways skills could be attained. Research is a very broad category, and can involve anything from worshipping at the shrines with sacrifices, to actively practicing skills you want to unlock.

While your new character wouldn't be able to advance quickly on their own, with the aid of an instructor or educational institution, you could rise fairly quick indeed. That's the point of this system, to foster a community of educators that can help new players (and characters) advance quickly through skills they'd already researched and studied. It would also foster a community of researchers always working to advance their communities (and the worlds) tech level. It's all about cooperation and community (and competition between different communities to be the first to unlock a skill).

Silliness aside, realism is a neat thing, and makes the game more believable. But gameplay is more important, so when the two come in conflict realism must lose. Doing what you like to raise what skills you want is better gameplay than being forced to do specific things to raise specific skills.

Part of this idea is to encourage even further the building of communities. But remember, the individual teaching you doesn't have to be online, or even someone you know. You'd just need to find an open education building with an active teacher, and settle down. If you live remotely, this will just mean a trip into town now and then to get the skills you want, and then back out to your wilderness home.
