I like all of your ideas actually. Prison is no substitute for a good tar and feathering... Rangers need to not have free reign to rape and pillage for petty crimes. Introduce different punishments. Hobbling, Tar and Feathers, and branding are all very good ideas.

I don't see how prison would be so terrible if there was a suicide option while in prison. If you'd prefer, it could be just like dying (ie it would be dying). If, on the other hand, you wanted to pay your ransom or try to have your friends break you out, you could do that and not lose your character. It would absolutely be a lesser punishment than getting killed right away, as then you don't have a choice, and as several people have said I think less-than-death punishments would be a nice addition.

If we get paint for whatever decorative purposes, maybe you dump a bucket of paint on them, leaving "paint splotches" on the ground at regular intervals, which can be used for tracking (simply for the sake of tracking and mocking them, not for summoning, but maybe it would count as vandalism if they dripped paint on someone else's claim).

Maybe you could also rename a criminal. For a whole week, every new person they kin will see the new name and not know their original name.

I feel there would be alot of people with the name "Dickface" or "Penis" running around. This would be rather entertaining.
