Any rare creatures that give anything worthwhile are a terrible idea.
Case A: Item is powerful so someone becomes much more powerful than everyone else
Case B: Item isn't really that powerful so just gets stored away and never used due to its rarity, waste of a sprite.

Agreed. But megabeasts as obstacles rather than prizes would be fun, I think.

I think that if rare monsters are added, they should guard something that is otherwise obtainable. Like there's a cave bear somewhere, and behind it is a vein of gold, or silver or something else you can get elsewhere, but in this case you know it will be there. It could also drop more meat, bones and other things, as well as more LP. Maybe the rare monster could also drop a special skull, that is used to build a trophy totem. And the trophy totem could add maybe 50 (or more) authority to a village, and it could be a status symbol for a town. I think such a trophy should also be able to be stolen, and it could lead to town rivalries, where Town A steals it from Town B, and Town B tries to get it back. Then they find that Town C snuck in one night and stole it from Town A.


I do like the idea of them roaming around though, but they could still have a cave that has an added bonus in it (still nothing you can't get elsewhere). And if you find the cave/lair/whatever, you can lie in wait with other people instead of looking for it.

If they gave lots of an item, I think it would be good. Say there was a dragon scale necklace that gave con and str benifits, but a dragon gives say 20-30 of them.

Also, I really like the idea of a trophy totem, though it should give bonuses to players not in villages. (such as extra expansion to their claim or something)

I only mentioned towns because that's who would probably be fighting them the most. Maybe it could work both ways: Towns it offers authority, and regular claims it lowers the cost or something.

I'd still like to see it be something that can be stolen, and that if you can take it and keep it, it proves you're just as tough as, if not tougher than the people you took it from. Even if it doesn't come from rare monsters, having an object like that in this game would be awesome.

EDIT: I agree with potjeh, megabeasts as obstacles sounds more fun than mega-beasts as giant fanged treasure chests for the super players. Make them attack towns

I think having random lair spawns would be nice. And having a sprawl of (strong) wild life spawn near it would be neat. Maybe something not so valuable(like bears) to the point where villages near would not kill the beast, but farm the bears. Maybe a bunch of aggroing lvl4 foxes or something so villages near would be annoyed by them, to the point where they would kill the beast in the lair.

Heh, love this idea, the name conjures up memories of giant bosses that die instantly if you shoot them in the glowimg weakspot though, I certainly hope that doesn't happen here.

In my opinion the best way to give giant beasties some treasure is to make them spawn in in quality spots and return to them when not busy rampaging. Sea serpents spawn near water Q spots, hill giants near clay, ents near trees and dragons would obviously spawn in mines. Your reward for slaying the beast would be the resources it guards.
