This.

I never liked the fact that, despite the decent number of recipes, it only took a handful of foods (10 or so out of the dozens of possibilities) to keep all my FEPs balanced. Why bother making a creamy cock when I could just eat a DDD or a RoB (if I wanted AGI) or a handful of mussels (if I wanted DEX) and get the same result? Give all of the recipes a purpose - other than just as a way to clear out the cupboards when they start getting full.

Hm, maybe if the food diversity bonus worked across multiple FEP bars somehow?

Perhaps if "food diversity" were a stat itself, almost like the oft-ridiculed "happiness" meter?

The more varied your food intake is, the higher that meter goes, and the higher your FEP multiplier gets. And vice-versa of course. I don't know how you would script it to change though.

This may be overcomplicated, but what about:

1) Constantly store the last three things eaten (ignore q)
2) Check the type of food eaten when it happens
3) If (2) does not match any of the things in (1), then increase "food diversity" meter (FD) by +1
-- If (2) matches only one, then FD remains unchanged
-- If (2) matches two previous foods, then FD decreases by -1
-- If (2) matches all three, then FD decreases by -2

Let FD range between +/- 10 or +/- 20, with max and min multipliers something like 0.01x and 3x

My logic here is that it should take a significant effort to raise the FEP multiplier, and this should increase the impact of the RNG unless you make a strong effort to eat pure-FEP type foods. Ignoring food diversity should have a strong downward effect on the multiplier. You can go on a short binge of the same kind of food, but not for very long if you want to keep your FEP gain rate reasonable.

Main flaw in that is that the tracking length (3 in your example) is woefully inadequate and any fixed number their will be an upper ceiling to the number of items needed for the bonus. In principle though you have the basis for implementing what Potjeh describes but it need to be modified so as to not have a cap on number of food types. Also we really want separate bars for each stat so how that would work should be considered as well.

That defeats the whole fucking purpose of FEPs.

I've been reading people pulling their hair out over the random rolling for ages now and talking about how this random aspect needs to be eliminated in favor of something more deterministic. I'd always imagined that would take the form of accumulating each type of FEP into it's own bar which would not be reset until it's filled. Perhaps some other mechanism is preferred but I though their was indeed a consensus that randomly rolling the point earned is a bad mechanic.

Only a handful of people have ever brought up seperate FEP bars and as far as I can remember they were all dumbasses. The FEP system is one of the great ideas in this game and should definitely be kept alive in its very essence.
