this might be okay as long as continents were decently sized instead of incredibly tiny like most of these games

and if the sea was more than an endless expanse of water - having currents, wind, creatures, something to break up the monotony a bit

Seconded. Average continent size should be around the size of our current map. Some bigger, some smaller. Also, archipelagos.

Also, we need flags on our ships. Can't have proper piracy without the jolly roger.

Well, I think villages could be open for reincarnation of died village members, but I think that in order to open up spawning to everyone there should be a ton of work involved.

Actually that's not bad at at all. It makes sense that "descendants" of characters that moved into the town would start there.

It also seems the general consensus is for there to be large-scale continents (the rough size of the entire current world map) with large oceans between them, as well as such things as island chains and land bridges.

Food for thought: the current world is 5,000 x 5,000 tiles. If each tile is a yard across, that's 2.8 miles on each edge. That means that these "continents" would be merely 7.4 square miles.
Surprise.

I think the continents should be a bit bigger than the world map on average, and if possible have the starting one be an above average in size continent. This way people aren't initially required to go to a different continent.
