The main advantage I see is providing some sense of life to an all-around dead world. To make the pressures on the player change over time. In spring you farm, in summer you build, in fall you harvest, in winter you craft, for example.
This would work a lot better _minus_ theft and vandalism. For those with poor defenses, resources are used immediately - or lost. For those with moderate defences, they can probably store cheap resources (wool, etc.) for an RL week or two, maybe more; bear meat, steel, silk, cheese etc. are more vulnerable - and thieves can tell (some of) those might exist by seeing such things as outdoor cheese racks. Newbies and casual players have poor defences. Those not living in huge groups or with super players tend to have only moderate defences. So every winter the casual players have nothing to craft with - and find something else to play. Some of the moderately defended also find themselves screwed, and likewise quit.
And yes, I _may_ be living in the past with regard to the reliable storage times. But I've never yet managed to make high quality cheese start to finish due to looting - haven't even managed to determine the recipes. I've actually been left alone long enough this last time that I could have done it - isn't 20/20 hindsight fun - but I was rather sick of playing - and pessimistic - after I got rid of the griefer who trashed all my in-progress cheese and most of my curd tubs.
