Don't get any ideas, I thought of rat kings a long, long time ago.

Pfft, don't try to steal credit for my idea!

Making them craftable, though, that's a good idea.

If so perhaps associate it with a skill like animal husbandry or cloth making because it would be weird if newbies could make rat kings and I'm sure you'd need some dexterous sewing skills to tie together a bunch of live rat tails.

Perhaps, but in Terry Pratchett's The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, aspiring rat catchers have to make a rat king out of live rats to prove themselves, which is more fun in my opinion. :p
