well currently i have a complete local map, and it wont even load because the server is laggin so much. so i have a useless map basically. so anything that will make my map not useless, would be nice.

and lets not forget that maps take up much more space than necessary from dev insistence on using textures instead of something more practical like solid colors

It occurs to me that the mapping process should become automatic. Perhaps as a toggle.

This would be very handy, half of my time making maps is spent with the map open carefully comparing my position on the mini map to make sure I've moved into the next block before mapping again, it is very easy to waste ink if your not careful. Automapping should ensure that you don't waste any ink and don't have to be constantly looking at the map & minimap.

By the way you go through ink like water and have to carry a lot (though its bulk is secondary to all the paper). At 10 uses per jar and 25 blocks on a map you need two and a half LITERS of ink for one map which is crazy, perhaps 0.1 liters will 'charge' the quill (select a feather an right click the ink) which will then be good for 5-10 uses. That would seem a lot more reasonable with 1 jar making 2-4 maps.

I also really like the idea of using some travel options on and these could be new skills as well

Map Reading - Puts a moving X at your location on any map you look at (just like the minimap)
Orienteering - Allows travel on a map, either to arbitrary points or to predetermined ones

These skills should be separate from Cartography so people who just want to use a map don't want to make one.

reduced a 8mb supergrid (with census showing) to 700kb way back when

Would that allow us to further increase the capacity of the server's active connections or just make actually getting minimaps in the game viable. I'm not sure but either scenario is an improvment. I mean...what good are some leet ass textures if no one ever sees them? I haven't seen more than a dozen minimaps since the reset/lagfix.

Would be cool if maps showed people on your kin list. Especially regional, and only "mutual kin".

Also the ability to create a "homing signal" mark on a map that your whole party sees as an arrow. Kind of like a "destination point" thingy.
______

We've already broken the fourth wall with homing signals to players.
