Nets would require lots of string to be made, so that's already their greatest downside against using simply fishing poles.

I think we are missing the obvious here, larger boats and oceans in the world would bring in.... WHALING. Take your trusty harpoon, hope to hell moby dick doesn't drown you and your crew, then bam, enough whale meat to feed the village for months ;)

EDIT: The reign of bears will end

Anyone with a farm and either flax or hemp has more string then they know what to do with.

they should make
1)Long thin canoes= 3 people but no storage space+ go faster then rowing boats
2)Longboats/Drakars= 5-6 people (at least 3 necessary to sail), this would be a raiding boat. You drop off from village to village and act like a viking shouting RAWRRRR as the longboats come to shore and all the peasants run away. Longboats whould cost a shitload of wood ;) , but make it up in coolness/people it can transport/storage .

hmm, viking-style boats and raids...i love it!!!! and the fishing pole and net is a great idea, imo. i think the pole should be the slower, but catch higher q fish, and the net should catch lots of low q fish faster than the pole. so if you just need food, and not FEP, use the net, but need FEP, then whip out a pole and wait!

I like the idea of more diverse, and bigger boats.
Most of all, I'd like to see some kind of primitive ship, that does not require as many boards as the boat we have now. It's a drag, when trying to map / explore an area, that you either have to crawl with a boat on your head, or need to build one everytime you bump into a river, and want to cross it.
A dugout log raft, crafted from a single log, seems a nice alternative.
It should ofcourse have major drawbacks over regular boats, like, no carrying capacity, only 1 person in it, slower speed. It should decay in few hits and cannot be repaired.

yah, that is kinda cool. i say a very slow and weak raft made of branches and string, and then the dugout carved from an entire log, that is faster and tougher than the raft, but still slow and weak compared to the rowboat.

Make it require rope as well then.

What rope? The one which require ten strings to be made?

Besides i meant it would be great if a fishing with a rod mechanics would not be completely useless after you craft your first net.

Yes, that one. In regards to fishing mechanics, there are quite a few ways of catching fish besides rods and nets, like harpoon fishing or fishing on ice or even circle fishing, so the devs have what to choose from.
