I read 'long and exhausting process' because...you know....it's not long and exhausting enough to trek dozens of local maps as it is.

No. The reason that mines are so "difficult" to find is so that every Tom, Dick and Harry in this game doesn't have one. One recurring theme in this game seems to be that nothing good comes easily: livestock, high q wood, merchant robes, etc...mines should be no exception to this, if you want the big reward of owning a mine, you should have to jump through some pretty high hoops for it, not just grab a skill and start poking at rocks.

Plus there are very few things in this game more satisfying than success after a long prospecting run where you've eaten nothing but mulberries and rabbits for days, finally tracking down that mine and setting your claim up :)
