Ok I admit i was never a metalsmith or miner.
Still though, there is NO concievable way to make a safe system with keys? even including additions like passwords, barring or permission based shit?

God I hope teleportation is being removed. Keys will have to be altered first though. Personally I like the idea of any village member being able to open any gate on their village claim.

While the idea of keys is alright, adding a bit more danger if you choose to carry keys around, in practice all people do is leave them on an alt. I'm against any mechanic that encourages alts.

And barring is essentially permissions.

But anyway, the main reason I want permissions is that I can let people who are *not* village members enter certain areas. I kinda have that at the moment, and it's the Buyan charterstone. I use it to limit access to my stalls to trustworthy people. I've had zero thefts in my shop so far, and I've bought mansions full of fish through it. So I'm sure you can see why I'd hate to lose my market scheme, and it's obvious why handing out market keys like they're candy is a bad idea.

Yeah ok sorry. I felt the last couple of posts by me and you and Jaquarde were becoming nothing more than short, snappy, angry replies to one and another.
A lot of your arguments seem to be based around that YOU want to keep YOUR shit safe. I think where we really differ in opinion, is that you guys think that the current key system is too risky, while i think that, no, it's totally okay that shit can get fucked up easily and a bunch of dudes can end up dead, my keys stolen etc, AS LONG as i get to do the same myself.

I think game balance discussions in this game are often affected by politics, since shit seems to MATTER much more here than in other games.
where in WoW you can still go wherever and gank people if Blizzard doesn't buff Warlocks and nerf Rogues, in H&H, if J-Lo nerf, say, established peaceful settlements in favour of nomadic, raiding ones, one part might end up dead and thrown off their power peak.

Which is why I think I should shut up, whatever. I think this is up to Jorb/Loftar to decide, as they are clearly the most neutral party here.

you guys keep talking though, as Jaquarde said, I'll fuck off until i have something useful to add. (Never! :roll: )

Holy shit this topic sure exploded.

So why exactly is the vocal minority so adamantly against the idea of village claim permissions based system for gates? I think Whitehead's and Jackard's idea sounds fine (Jackard's being the more ambitious of the two). Is it just because it removes the minor possibility of gaining access to a village by murdering a village member? Everyone's in agreement that keys are never actually taken outside of the city limits in the first part, so realistically no one is gaining access to villages via murder anyway. I can understand wanting to have some sort of excitement or risk surrounding gate management in the game, but as it stands the whole key system is horribly broken, and the proposed ideas are an extremely simple and convenient way of fixing them.

So what exactly is the problem here?

has been and will be for along time, gref'ing

for idiots who forget to close off there walls or glue 'em shut. they get shut in
for pro grefer's they will build a bloody stone wall in front of your town wall in under a day (trust me..i'v seen it)

there's so many useful thing's teleporting is used for.

the way i'd say yes to teleporting is when im allowed to have a 2ed claim that goes up to a 15x15max
so when i go far far from home, I can protect my stuff on my boat with the small claim for then right till i can get back home.

so, why is the key syste so "broken" i dont seem to get it, as in RL you get your keys stolen and there is not much to do, and i do agree that alt-gameplay is BS, reason why i find Keys worthless, pointless, and stupid, is because we can warp, force to use em and you´ll see how usefull they become all of a sudden :twisted:
also, the argue most ppl in here give is that " one of my villagers die, i get screwed" and as far as i can see, thats the point, as sotsa said, village walls is not enought, you are supposed to keep your goods stored somewhere safe, i doubt you will just leave a LC of gold bars by your idol, thats were hearth vaults come into play, wich also involves teleporting, wich also involves alts :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll: :roll: so in the end everything stays the same, teleporting may be removed and some of us will get fucked because of it, other will just "lol" about it, and at this point i have no fucking idea what im talking about, might stop posting....... :oops:

IRL if your keys get stolen it doesn't result in your whole city getting burned down, so don't even go there.

Let's see in RL keys are used to protect property from usually honest non crime committing people. A person that wants to get on the other side of a locked door will pick the lock, bash the door, cut the chain, break the window the only thing that might make him think twice is getting caught and doing jail time. But this happens inside a society with it's own laws justice system and police. Once you factor in an enemy nation/combatant raider pillager whatever keys are just a joke. I've made this argument before do you think every damn citizen of a medieval fortified town/castle had a key to the main gate? Do you think the damn gate even had a damn key? No it had fucking multiple guards 24/7, an alarm system to rouse the entire guard etc...

So stop being a moron keys are retarded regardless of teleportation.
