Sanctuaries

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Depends on what you mean by "approve". Would I be satisfied if someone started using this strategy in-game? Probably not (depends on circumstance, as war can do funny things to people). Would I be satisfied if the devs said we absolutely cannot do it? Definitely not. It is infinitely more profound when someone chooses to set down their weapon of their own volition than it is to have Big Brother take it away from them.

Getting back on topic, tying one's ability to harm a sanctuary to skills would be interesting (like an anti-druid skill set to combat druidry, etc.), though it'd also make sense to tie this stuff to the nature/industry slider.

Edit: If the devs prevent us from ever engaging in this strategy, then they should remove all the black skills. We'd wind up with a different game which I probably would be satisfied with albeit for different reasons.

I can't see how preventing the co-collapse of forests is in any way not industry related, it is no-ones best interest to completely drain all resources. Thus the sanctuary would be a pleasant reminder of when enough is enough.
I will steal all of the RuneStones in the land, if your stone has gone missing in the night then I'm already hauling it.

Yeah, what?
This is only applying to forests...
Plus it would take great skill/time/effort just to sanctifiy one forest, let alone every forest known to Hearth.
Jackard, you're an idiot.

Sandbox by definition does not mean entirely boundless.

Ever wondered why people don't have games which allow you to shape the entire landscape flawlessly down to mountains and landmass? Griefing is one, the second is that it's impossible to accomplish this.
I can deal with sandboxes having certain boundaries that you don't cross, and I can deal with them having impossibilities, you can't literally hit or attack the ground in this game or kill the water but you aren't complaining about that.

Regardless of all that I never once said it would be impossible for people to totally ruin sanctuaries and plough them out, what I did suggest is making that very hard, which puts people off the thought of chopping the forests.

Yes. Every single time I see a game that doesn't allow me to change the landscape, or even bust through a flimsy wooden fence/door with my god damned rocket launcher I curse the dev's for their short sightedness.

EveryTimeV wrote:Griefing is one, the second is that it's impossible to accomplish this.

Griefing is being combated in other ways, which is good, it's not impossible, it's merely more difficult than churning out run of the mill boring assed linear story games. The intent to create a game in which players can have "meaningful and long term/permanent impact on the game world" is one of the things I most like and respect about J&L's project here.

Check older threads, both of these have been suggested and may be implemented at some stage. (creating ramps in ridges and building channels / draining lakes/swamps)

Fair point, I tend to agree. Within the current game mechanic, if Loftar implements tree's automatically re-planting themselves, then it may end up being possible to surround a single fir at the middle of the forest with a brick wall, so no-one can get to it, but it can still self sow to replenish the forest (slowly over time).
It'd be ugly as heck, but achieve a similar goal.
