You've got a very solid point, burg, and (I'm assuming) is the same reason Potjeh (and others who have spoken elsewhere and not spoken up about it) is agreeing on removing PB altogether. However, if I recall some discussions correctly (wasn't here at the time, just from what I've read in archives) part of some of the changes to the game over time included getting away from one super strong character. Maybe I've misread those in that they were just referring to combat aspects.
If a single character could, in theory, do everything, the only limit would be any number of LP invested. For activities like farming, you're pretty much making a highly specialized character, anyway. With the current mining system, a lot of people are making mining alts just so they don't risk a skilled character dying to chance cave-ins or troll spawns. Creating specialized characters has always been the case in this game (at least since I started playing). It's just gotten out of hand with the curio system and pretty much nullifying the perma-death aspect of the game with multiple characters all eating up curios so if one dies, the game goes on without any real loss.
Don't get me wrong. I won't miss them at all if they do disappear. I played all of my time in w3 and w4 without even touching the two I mentioned (nat/ind, bar/civ). They did make life much easier when I decided to go the route of specializing for farming and mining as it then took a third less work to get the same results. My point was "hey, aren't these two at least useful?" Maybe instead of a slider, the incrementable skills could provide the same effect with a "Mining" skill added that had an effect on ore production.
