This is the main issue I have with steam, you have to start steam to play any of your games, and what's more if you don't have internet, you can't access your games. there is offline mode, but you have to activate that while being online.
every game I've bought on steam, I then promptly pirate.
Half the time steam crashes on startup, and when I did use it a few years ago, I needed to uninstall and reinstall frequently.

That said, I did play a few games I wouldn't have otherwise eg terraria and audiosurf.

I couldn't agree more.

Yeah. You need DirectX to play a lot of other games. I think that's a slightly different thing. :)

What's "un"?

.deb files need superuser privileges to install, and only install to the system-wide directory hierarchy. A program that needs more than user-level privileges and/or doesn't want to install simply in my home directory is going to have to display extremely good reason for that.

It is true, per se, that I could analyze the contents of the .deb and see if I can make it run without either, but there's a limit to how far I'm willing to go for a program that I'm not well-disposed towards from the outset.

/etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d contains crypto-keys that are authorized with the system for unsupervised installs. I'm not so trusting of Valve as to put their keys in there.

Furthermore, Steam has to display a higher standard than most programs, seeing as how a main part of its purpose is to install software on my system. It is extremely common for proprietary software (not least for those with Windows heritage) to do this completely wrong, and seeing as how Steam started off in this regard with the above two points, I'm already losing whatever faint hope I ever had on it getting that right.

Furthermore, Steam is just a software installer. I'd rather take care of that part myself. The less software, the better. :)

can't you say the same shit for apt or whatever package manager?

Well, the whole point about "doing it properly" was a fairly important one. :)

Also, I wouldn't install APT on a Fedora/Centos system.

To some extent, sure. I must admit I don't quite see the connection of the quote to that question, though. I assume it isn't "how can you purport to game when you don't use Steam".

my point is that you need su to install lots of packages, don't you? and you need your package manager (steam is a package manager, from a certain point of view) to have permission to install packages (games).

what games do you play?

Not really. The vast majority of programs can be installed without any special privileges. APT needs root to do it for you, but there's almost always the option not to, depending on needs and context.
Code: Select all
./configure --prefix=$HOME/sys
make install

No package manager or privileges needed.

As of late, I've mostly been playing Smash Bros Melee with kaka.

There are a few more modern games that I'd really like to try, but the 8+ GB downloads tend to turn me off. Also, Wine seems to have had a dip in compatibility again. A few years ago I could almost feel assured that a given game would work with it, but since then it has been less so, unfortunately.
