Whatever stockpile you implement will need to have some advantage (be that in decay prevention or storage ability) over existing construction signs because otherwise, everyone will just keep using construction signs instead (HELLO BUCKETS OF WINE, WHY AREN'T YOU STORED IN BOTTLES IN A WINE RACK. OH... THAT'S RIGHT).
Any material in a construction sign that is not built (IE: It's just placed) should disappear instantly when decay hits. Anything that's built should have a percentage reduction (10% of materials required every time decay hits?), so it takes a bit of time before you lose that half-built house. Obviously so people are encourage to finish what they're building, not store things in construction signs and actually do have a chance to finish that house or Mansion over a day or two.
The flip-side then is people will store their materials in stockpiles around a building site before then placing the sign and dumping everything in it (Shift + Mouse Wheel transfer should alleviate any major transfer issues there, though a take-all button might be more obvious as I often forget about the mouse-wheel option). This will look nicer aesthetically too, rather than that kind of plain sign you see everywhere.
As for amounts, it's easy enough to make each stockpile store 100 of whatever item it's built for. 6 bales of hay (storing 100 straw each), 3 piles of stone, a pile of blocks and a pile of boards would be all that's needed for a Stone Mansion. Put the stuff in stockpiles as you collect the straw, then when you have everything ready, place the construction sign and run back and forth as you transfer to and fro.
The
advanced option would be that instead of construction signs in the first place, you actually end up with bales of hay, piles of stone etc... when you place something like a Stone Mansion. So the construction sign in the middle would denote the access point for the build option and any left-over materials (metal) but when you place the sign, you get the "stockpiles" as objects placed in the actual Mansion's footprint itself. You then interact with the stock-piles to place and remove those materials. Visually that'd look a lot better too when building something.

For traders, each pile would be a different Q marked by a Rune Stone or in cases like straw, Q wouldn't matter.
