1. Replace the signs for build sites with differing graphics based on major material used (Wood site, brick, clay, straw, stone, etc.)
2. Allow unclaimed build sites to decay.

Anything more is unnecessary, a waste of time, possibly damaging to gameplay.

From an aesthetics point of view I find this somewhat less appealing than having uniformly shaped stockpiles, and having the size vs amount held seems better than defaulting to a palisade cornerpost as it is now. The fact that build signs currently have varying 'sizes' based on the hitbox of the item being built could also limit what jorb could do with the graphics. (A wood pile for a 7x7 timber house would need to fit in a 1x1 palisade cornerpost). I do agree that some of the ideas going around here are in the 'too much' territory, though.

The ability to 'control quality' mentioned on the last page would also be pretty damn convenient.

We could have stockpiles built from different materials for different resources. Like cloth for sacks (grain, feathers, etc.) or planks for pallets (lumber, brick, etc.). Add visual indication of what resources are held, and in what quantities. If stockpiles are adjacent, combine their interface and allow us to draw/deposit any resource that is/fits in any one of the stockpiles. Dunno how to combine them for repairs, though.

Potjeh's angle is another that was trying to form in my mind but never quite coalesced - dedicated objects/buildings rather than reskinned build signs. This might could be the more natural way to go (and would probably be sort of like wine racks are now). Now that I think about it I think I really do support that as the way to go.

(I really want a stack of firewood to put outside my cabin now).

If this is being added, us farmers could certainly use better containers to store our seeds in. Something along the lines of Silos, or seed bins.

My stockpile is a simple amount of space with a runestone up front saying, "Timber Stockpile #1". I think that should be enough, thematically speaking. Instead of converting timber to blocks or planks before hand, why not just cart them home and pile them up there. That's more of a stock pile right there than a buildable object.

A lot of people do this, but it doesn't solve the end problem. The log can only be cut into 12 blocks with an axe or 4 (or 6 with metal saw) boards. I rarely need the exact number at one time. This means I end up breaking apart a log for a board or two, or a block or two, and the rest sit around on the ground until they vanish because it takes a cabinet to house four logs worth of boards, and I just don't have that kind of storage to be throwing away constantly.

Heh, well a temporary fix would be to use the boards to make a cabinet.

That is not a long term pile. The heaps are left for some time on a field to let them dry out. Then they are stored like that:

But.. I bet Jorb`ll draw a heap anyway :)

You both realize you can place a build sign to 'stockpile' stuff already, right? I keep an unbuilt log cabin around for repairing palisades and the few boards I always seem to have left over. The same could be done with a cabinet or tanning tub build sign for lesser amounts. This topic largely spawned because of talk of making build signs eventually decay and how that would necessitate actual stockpiles.
