I prefer Jorbs idea, in that the penalty for swimming being changed from death to KO and waking up in a random place. It would keep swimming dangerous, but not "you loose EVERYTHING" deadly.

One thing that has been forgotten, and may be fixed when (if) items get a weight, is the weight of the swimmers current equipment. Currently I jump into it with chainmail and pickaxe, and would very well deserve death if my stamina runs out. someone stripping to their underwear should last longer, and possibly also get away easier. (One could let the stamina drain be dependent on weight worn and carried, and having characters loosing all eq/inv in addition to KO random location on drowning)

Ooh, I like that. Waking up naked and unarmed in the middle of unknown territory, with the "Lost" debuff that makes you unable to port anywhere. Reminds me of URW a bit. Also makes for an exciting adventure. And if finding your way back takes hours on average, going for a swim will still have pretty serious consequences.

People with metal armour on / full inventories should still drown, of course.

I cross rivers by clicking the ground on the opposite bank. My hope is that if there is lag or my connection drops, my character will swim to the other side on his own.
