....but people stopped bitching about it. That must mean that boats in and of themselves are a perfectly viable permanent solution.

Which reminds me, steel is a horrible thing, it should have never been implemented in the first place ;)

Swimming

Postby Dx2 » Thu Dec 03, 2009 2:34 am

The skill does not appear in my skill list to purchase, and I'm not using a beginner character. Any advice?

You need fishing first.

Some ideas on swimming

Postby Caradon » Sun Jan 17, 2010 3:53 am

Swimming is fraught with peril, though it is not understood why. I understand that swimming requires plenty of stamina. But people should not be able to die on calm rivers. For fuck sakes people, the human body is buoyant enough to float if you arent a panicking flopping idiot. That said..

My suggestion is to add treacherous water, undertows, rapids, tree branches and even pirahnas to the mix. Players would require perception to see these dangers and, regardless of stamina, safely navigate these waters without a boat.

Another important aspect to the game is movement of water. Instead of just having a web of random rivers that do not flow, introduce a currents system. I understand that adding currents and animating the water appropriately will be a hassle though. So in terms of importance, keep that on the back burner.

Still, I feel it is important to make it so players will not die in calm water, they should wash up on short stunned, but not unconscious (it would be like they are unconscious only they still have health)

Animating the flow is not nearly as difficult as creating a logical system of flow that represents and semblance of geological consistency (Regardless of how you KISS it).

Allow players the ability to swim from the very start and have the skill just improve your stamina rates.

Have equipment affect stamina rates.

Add more types of water - start by changing 'shallow water' to 'shore' and separating 'deep water' into 'shallows' and 'deeps'. No drowning in shallows. Reserve 'deeps' for larger bodies of water and wider rivers. Later on you can add things like 'rapids'.
